Armory Week and Tiffany takeover
9 March 2016
I am happy to announce Art Diary guest writer, Tiffany Zabludowicz, who is on the ground in New York.
Armory week kicked off with the Spring/Break Art Show and an exploration of the theme ⌘COPY⌘PASTE. There were so many weird and wonderful things going on with exciting works to discover around each and every corner.
Talwst Santiago with his delicate work in miniature, 'Execution of Unarmed Black Men', showing the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson. Images of that event reminded him of Goya and so he based this piece on a painting by him.
My friend Alexander Clark chatted with David B. Smith about his pillow-like objects, which originate from Smith’s photography and found images.
I loved Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos’ ‘MHOA UNTDH’, with hands devoid of the iPhones they should be holding.
Alexander Clark, Nicholas de Kwiatkowski and I took a selfie in Giovanna Olmos’s mirror. Maybe I could ask her to make a painting of just our floating hands, no iPhone, no faces present.
Andrea McGitney in the booth she curated with works by Juan Sebastián Peláez and Elizabeth Ferry. Her booth was so fun and playful, so colourful and energetic.
I am slightly obsessed with these monsters by Roxanne Jackson. Creepy, intense, and totally alive. I also have a soft spot for anything glazed or sci-fi.
The bathroom was equally creepy with performers running around getting ready for whatever was going on in booth 4114.
The craziness continued with Eve Sussman’s literally insane installation and performers.
Artist, Lily Ives casually chilling in her bedroom in Cannibals, curated by Jo Shane and Maripol.
Finally I went to a Cultivist event at Natalie Frank's studio in Brooklyn for a figure-drawing lesson. It made me realize how rare it is I actually try my hand at creating anything physical despite working with art all the time. It made an excellent reprise from the hectic-ness of the fairs. Then after a wonderful Armory dinner at Gramercy Park Hotel it was time to head home.
