And the winner of the Baloise Art Prize goes to Sara Cwynar, represented by Foxy Production and Mary Reid Kelly, who’s with Arratia Beer.
Sara was experimenting with her photographic techniques and Mary’s film was set in a morgue viewing a pathologist examining a woman who had committed suicide.
The Museum Tinguely provided the highlight of the trip with Michael Landy’s show ‘Out of Order.’ He has a fetish for destroying objects and is a totally British artist through and through, his work really represents life in Britain alongside his continual references to his father who seems to be integral to his work. Using certain rigid art structures as a frame Michael brings social, political and economic issues to the fore. ‘Costermonger stall’ 1992-97 in the Zabludowicz Collection is just one example.
Walking from the Tinguely along the river bank, I turn left and hit LISTE Art Fair. Jannis Varelas greeted me with champagne in hand in front of The Breeder as a Guggenheim man performed gymnastics by the TV.
Our big discovery was Jean-Marie Appriou at Jan Kaps Gallery, we loved his work and snapped this up for the collection.
Fantastic little man falling into ceramic balls.
Then it was the big show, the reason we were in Basel and we were not disappointed as there was plenty to see. Salon 94 were showing Terry Adkins’ wonderful portraits of all his friends. Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn and Alissia Friedman all colour coordinated and enhancing this already outstanding work.
I spotted the Ajay Kurian at 47 Canal, an artist who celebrates objects and takes references from all around his life, embedding meaning and sometimes history into his works.
Loved this ‘Game Spy’ by Chadwick Rantanen at Standard (Oslo). An outdoor camera with digital butterflies, he’d created an ambiguous relationship between the object and its own functionality.
Herald St conjured the question of ‘art or not art’ with Michael Deans, ‘Not Titled (shores),’ a paperback publication all torn and screwed into a ball.
Max Hetzler was showing a great Ida Ekblad ‘Untitled (Grin),’ making me feel happy too.
Loved this work at Anton Kern by Frances Upritchard and Martino Gamper.
These Daniel Silver sculptures at our home grown Frith Street Gallery were astonishing.
It was great to see Brendan Fowler developing his intricate tapestries.
Philip Guston’s work from 1968 was beguiling and playful. 6.58pm on a wobbly clock.
Visiting Toby Ziegler’s paintings at Simon Lee Gallery and caught a chance to pose with Carine, Jane Suitor and Hayley Sieff.
The last random spot at Art Basel was this amazing set of dirty dishes at Reena Spaulings Fine Art. Actually an art work or not?
Yngve Holen topped off the visit at Kunsthalle Basel with ‘Vertical Seat’ where he continues to explore found materials and technology. Lizzie exploring this car finely cut in half.
