There was absolutely loads to see in Basel.
Our very first stop was LISTE to see what the young galleries had put together. There was so much work involving cigarettes and buckets. Loved this ‘Cigarette Hedgehog’ by Marlie Mul at Croy Nielsen.
Proyectos Ultravioleta were showing some very large cigarette butts lying on the floor and there was the usual Dan Colen cigarette butts and bottles.
One of my favourites, Haim Steinbach was showing this beautiful pale of milk hidden in a little door within a very big wall at Tanya Bonakdar.
Mary Mary were showing lovely work by Jonathan Gardner, this is ‘Hanging Chord.’
And Carlos/Ishikawa had a great Korakrit Arunanondchai installation.
Khanyisile Mbongwa was exhibiting a very interesting presentation at Kaskadenkondensator referencing being a black female.
We then took in the work of the young artists at Statements. Sanya Kantarovsky had created a wonderful video work, a short and utterly joyful animation.
Jakub Julian Ziolkowski had filled a room with hundreds of paintings. We would have loved this for the Collection but alas! It was the one that got away.
Pascale Marthine Tayou’s ‘Plastic Tree’ was marvellous.
We then finished the day back at the Grand Hotel Trois Rois' reinstalled Roth Bar, it was an amazing success. Hauser & Wirth gave a fabulous dinner in the ballroom which they had transformed into another incredibly detailed bar. It was show stopping, with an atmosphere that was so electric that after a few glasses of gorgeous red wine, I found myself dancing safely in the corner to the cheesy music.
