Back in The Swing of Things
12 February 2018
After an idyllic holiday on the beautiful island of Mustique with Hans Ulrich Obrist and Ian Cheng, who is preparing for his Serpentine show opening in March
I headed to Las Vegas where I do not need to go far to see some fun and exciting works. The first is the beautiful Christian Dior handbag by John Giorno - thanks to the new Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri
Then it is straight to see the completed D*Face mural on the side of the Plaza Hotel & Casino. Well done Roy Zab!
I was delighted to see KAWS proudly hanging in the Plaza office of Roy Zab and Jonathan Jossel
My curation skills were put to the test for an apartment I designed in Las Vegas. I thought Mira Dancy’s ‘Street Ofelia (purple)’, 2014 was most appropriate against the illuminated landscape. I put my heart into design, which was my previous profession for ten years before I moved into the art world, and opportunities do not come up too often
Collection work ‘Camouflage Fright Wig Blue and Brown on Taupe’, 2007 by Gavin Turk in the living room
Over at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) visitors were taking a much needed rest
Next stop is San Francisco where I discover that there are two art fairs happening at the same time. At FOG Design+Art our homegrown Stuart Shave was showing the work of Richard Tuttle. Here is ‘Perceived Obstacle No.46 (Twelve One Group #7)’, 1991
I loved the work of Doug & Mike Starn
‘Good Break’, 2017 by Alex Da Corte would be perfect for the collection
Great to see Isaac Julien’s show at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, I enjoyed seeing Simon de Pury who was one of the stars in this seven screen installation, ‘Playtime’, 2014
The installation included photographic portraits
I also loved the work called ‘Better Life (Ten Thousand Waves)’, 2010 a film about the struggle of daily life with ancient practices and mythology
I then had time to visit UNTITLED where I discovered a gallery from New York called Allouche Gallery. I loved the work of Katarina Janeckova, especially ‘Open Minded Household’, 2017
Also at Allouche Gallery I admired the work of 70’s born artist Taylor McKimens. Here is ‘Measure for Treasure’
It was a pleasure to visit the magnificent de Young space and check out ‘Genre-Nonconforming: The DIS Edutainment Network’ who created an incredible visual programme. Artists included Korakrit Arunanondchai, Christopher Kulendran Thomas and Amalia Ulman all of which are in the Zabludowicz Collection
I finally got to visit the studio of artist M Eifler aka BlinkPopShift. Her work was fun and intense, a labyrinth of shapes and experiences discovered mainly through Virtual Reality, although sometimes the odd hanging sculpture!
