Basel via Zurich
15 July 2019
A quick stopover in Zurich before Basel kicks off!
In London and the streets are full of art! Michael Craig Martin hanging out with Prada and Rolex on Bond Street
Xie Nanxing’s show ‘A Gift Like Kung Pao Chicken’ at Thomas Dane. His work ‘Spice no 3’ references Gerhard Richter’s ‘Ema (Nude on a Staircase)’ as well as other famous works of art
Paris was very interesting, I was most impressed by Seth Price’s ‘Self As Tube’ show at Galerie Chantal Crousel. Seth displayed photographs of people’s skin digitally stitched together and presented on light boxes and illuminated tubes
I dropped by to Galeriepcp to see Francesca Gavin’s sister, Seana, who was showing ‘Spiral Baby’. A free spirit who was allowed to wonder around in the 90s with her friends photographing them as they followed the sound system collective ‘Spiral Tribe’
Annette Messenger at Marian Goodman was very moving. ‘Sleeping Land’ is composed of puffer coats and hands, suggesting isolation, sleep and a void of human presence
Just like the works in the series, this installation pays homage to the most fragile people, to the rejected, the unhoused, those whose lives are reduced to a sleeping bag, as suggested by the work ‘3 Pantins PQ’, 2015
Then I was in Zurich floating to outer space! I visited the show ‘Fly me to the Moon’ at Kunsthaus Zurich, docuementing artists’ engagement with the Moon. I loved seeing Yinka Shonibare’s ‘Space Walk’, 2002 work
My favorite work was Sylvie Fleury’s ‘High Heels on the Moon’
I dropped by to one of my favourite galleries, Eva Presenhuber, who was showing Jean-Marie Appriou on the roof
Then straight to Kunsthalle Zürich where I visited the Ida Ekblad show ‘Fra Åre Til Ovn’ which is a description of how metal is extracted from ore and cast into sculptures. The same glittering gates that were in Paris were there to be seen once again, in a room full of iron and bronze casts
Ida was very happy
To help finance the show Ida had created some great benches
Hauser & Wirth were showing an epic Louise Bourgeois & Pablo Picasso exhibition, but I nipped downstairs and spotted this wonderful Mira Schendel work
I visited some lovely homes and collections. It was a joy to spot Sam Falls shining in the sun
At a dinner kindly hosted by a few galleries including Max Hetzler and Herald St I got the best seat next to George from the artist duo Gilbert and George. We had wonderful conversation
The next day I was on our way to LISTE art fair where there was much to see. I enjoyed viewing the work of Swiss artist Mathis Altmann whom I had spotted a few years ago in Miami. I loved his installation ‘Delve of Spade’
We fell for this work by Mathis Altmann called ‘Hazardous Monotony’
Seventeen were showing a solo presentation by Patrick Goddard. Not sure what all the symbolism was about, very politically loaded, and apparently the artist is a Doctor
In the next room at LISTE the Estonian artist Kris Leslamus work was a pair of trousers being picked up by some birds
One of my favourite moments was visiting Raphaeala Vogal at Gregor Staiger Gallery. Japanese artist E’wao Kagoshima, now in her 80s, was showing some of her sinister works
At Galerie Maria Bernheim Swiss artist Miriam Laura Leonardi was showing some of her nostalgic work which were deconstructed into another meaning, usually a Hollywood reference or some obscure pop culture imagery
At the same time I bumped into these lovely collectors from LA - Marla and Jeffrey Michaels
