Beijing Visit
29 January 2020
My wonderful guides, artist Ye Linghan and Michael Xufu Huang who is the new director of X Museum, opening in March. The resources available to Ye are the thing that is pushing his practice, using AI features on apps to render his human Lucy type creatures
We visited Guan Xiao in her studio, here she is in front of her new palette paintings ready to be shipped to all the corners of the world
Yu Honglei told me body size is very important to him as he treats his paintings as sculptures. He is Guan’s partner and they constantly grow together
It was a pleasure to meet Ye Funa who showed us her work, including this special nail
Her moving image works based on the position of women
Hotel Éclat, in the heart of Beijing, houses one of the wackiest collections I have ever seen. The shopping mall has so many wonderfully strange pieces of art, such as this affectionately nicknamed Warren Buffet sculpture by Chen Wenling
Above is another work by the same artist, an example of human tension in the ever changing conditions of China
We stopped by at our Chinese friend’s beautiful home and I had time to meet a few more established artists such as Zeng Fanzhi
Our beloved hosts had donkey sandwiches on the menu if we so desired
I headed to Long March where I met up with Director Aimee Lin and her partner Theresa. I liked their group show very much showing China’s young talent
Miti Ruangkitya caught my eye
Yuling Zhang and Tim Crowley welcomed me at the KWM Art Centre where saw Wu Junyong’s solo show ‘Where are the Fantastic Beasts?’
Back at Hotel Éclat we took stock of the eccentric art and impressive architecture
