Brussels and Cologne
22 April 2013
We are welcomed at Brussels by James Fuentes waiting in despair on a Maarten Vanden Eynde sculpture at the front entrance for his art works from New York to arrive.
The fair was full of goodies hidden in in all corners. There was something about nudity running through the art fair. John D Andrea’s meticulous detail of a beauty.
In Cologne Mel Romos at Ernst Hilger Wein: a woman sitting on a hamburger.
Back in Brussels Julie Berther naked gentleman discretely covered up at Gallery Georges Phillipe and Nathalie Vallois.
Wang Du’s Post Image 03 at Baronian.
Also there were a few animals lurking around, I particularly loved this work by Cory Arcangel at Team Gallery, president Clinton on a running Circuit with the Chinese PM.
Deborah Sengl at Cologne I thought was crackers.
And a real life pretty bird as part of the installation at Figge Von Rosen by Yelena Popova.
Back in Brussels a fabulous Rachel Harrison dog at Galerie Laurent Godin.
We loved the indoor cinema, cool architecture.
We liked the work of Julia Rometti and Victor Costalzs at Gallery Jousse Enterprise.
Also on their stand was the most desirable Matthew Darbyshire.
The question of art no art came up again with Christoph weber at Gallery Nachst St Stephan
Then again in Cologne at Gallery Gisela Capitain with Karla Black.
A concrete meal at Heike Curze and Wolfgang Beckstiener made me very hungry and made me think of Lucy Tomlins who will be showing with our Invites programme in May.
We were very happy as we had acquired for the collection a colourful Secundino Hernandez from Gallery Krinzinger.
Francesca DiMattio at Pippy Houldsworth.
On our way out we dropped into the Derek Eller Gallery where we bumped into artist Adam Marnie who told me he his brutal challenging works were a celebration of resting from flowers.
The next day Myself Lizzie, Muriel from the Crandford Collection (thank goodness she spoke French) and a Chinese girl made a run for the train to Cologne under the streets of Brussels. Cologne like last year was vibrant and full of interesting art. Sam Falls at Gallery Marta Cervera.
Lizzie and Kai Forsblum posing next to a wonderful Per Kirkeby.
Per Kirkeby drawings.
Eigen + Art showed a magnificent new David Schnell and I was happy to see David had moved in a new direction.
Then Stella Hamburg leaning against a wall.
At Ancient and Modern a new interesting artist looking at traditional modern painting called Jan Pleitner was being shown.
I discovered for the first time the artist Bettina Pouttschi at Buchman and thought her work was brave and bold.
As we left for London there was Ed Atkins to wave us goodbye. Back to London we go.
