After two days of jam-packed fairs, it should have been a
challenge to do a third, but when the space is as amazing as Independent’s new
Spring Street Studios home, it’s not really a problem.
Independent was perfect, with so much light flowing through and carefully considered curated booths.
Here’s a pic that Peter Fleissig snapped of Jill Bernstein and I chatting with the amazing Elizabeth Dee in her fantastic booth, showing Philippe Decrauzat at her fantastic fair. I am so excited for her and can’t wait to see what she has in store for us when her gallery opens in Harlem and when Independent goes to Brussels! That hole was a bit dangerous though...
I loved the White Columns section of the fair (it seems wrong to reduce it to calling it a booth) particularly these ceramic sculptures by Bruce M. Sherman.

Is that a beekeeper? I don’t really know but I really loved the surprising combo at The Clearing of these metal and glass space-age sculptures by Jean Marie Appriou and the more traditional and formal paintings by Sebastian Black.
Gavin Brown’s Karl Holmqvist booth was TRBL with word games all around. People were wearing badges saying MAD or SAD around the fair.
I was totally intrigued by this piece. It is a collaboration between David Lieske and Rob Kulisek. It’s painfully hip but also weird enough that that is ok. They have been collaborating for only about a year, but the collaboration sounds nuts. Lieske DJs and runs a gallery and Kulisek takes fashion photographs. These photographs are of the writer Jack Gross wearing Telfar clothes. I’m always curious about how two artists can totally join practices and I look forward to seeing where these two take Kulisek/Lieske.
Another form of collaboration. I find these photographs from 1974 very emotional about a road trip between the artist, Phel Steinmetz, and his father. It is all about failed communication and is beautifully sensitive.
More on driving, Yngve Holen’s scooter headlights wittily titled ‘Hater Headlights’ at Modern Art.
And Allison Katz’ painting of a car is so strong. I love her choices of subject matters, from eggs to showers, all painted with a sort of attractive flatness and also a really enticing palette.
Another great painter, Sean Steadman. I fell for this painting big time. I still don’t quite know what’s going on here but I am ready to explore it feet first. Steadman is only a bit older than me and can paint so well already.
I can almost guarantee that Jesse Stecklow is the only artist showing at Independent that’s younger than me, but his work doesn’t reveal his age at all.
Donna Huanca looking amazing with her work. Her booth at Peres was a hit! I cannot actually friggin’ wait for her show at Zabludowicz Collection!
And much later in the night, more great girl artists and curators at Tolga’s Happy Ending party celebrating the Armory.
