Cologne Art Fair

Then it was a crack of dawn, early morning flight to the Art Cologne 2017 fair
We headed straight to Galerie Joseph Tang to take in the gorgeous work of Daiga Grantina, I first noticed Daiga at the first Paris Internationale
A few American art galleries participated this year. Essex Street, were showing this piece by Zak Prekop, which I loved
I don’t know if it was the American influence, but both the Horts and the Rubells decided to pay Art Cologne a visit this year too
Loved this ‘Girl’ 2016 by Naama Arad, a new discovery at Sommer Contemporary Art
Jennifer Tee’s work at Markus Lüttgen was quite intriguing
‘Public Hybrids’, the David Jablonowski curated booth for Markus Lüttgen was very impressive and I particularly loved ‘Untitled (Shoes)’ 2017 by Adriano Amaral
Natalia Hug had a very sympathetic presentation of Corin Sworn works
Our biggest discovery was Dale Lewis at Choi & Lager Gallery. A former assistant to the luminous Raqib Shaw, Dale’s work was strong and prolific
I particularly loved his interpretation of Raqib as a beautiful happy elephant, in the painting ‘The Apprentice’ 2017
Hauser & Wirth was full of surprises, especially Phyllida Barlow’s ‘untitled: offcuts; 2016.’ Really looking forward to seeing what Phyllida will do for the Venice Biennale this year
The Djordje Ozbolt works on the Hauser & Wirth stand were both cynical and lovely
The real highlight was the Gagosian Gallery stand, which was almost empty except for two Cady Noland works, ‘Chainlink Fence’ 1992 and ‘Untitled’ 1992, neither of which were for sale (well, maybe if the right figure was offered!) and a couple of gorgeous Rudolf Stingel paintings. Chris Burden‘s work ‘Buddha’s Fingers’ 2014-15 stood in the middle of the stand shining out with its glorious light
