Day 3 Miami to Marfa
2 February 2023
At Rubell Museum there was some wonderful work. We liked the energy of Alexandre Diop, who is Artist in Residence
The Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Room and Narcissus Garden was so much fun and we loved visiting this room of illusions
Hiding in the room of Keith Haring was a lady ready for art, dressed in Keith Haring colours!
I loved this sculptural sound suit by Nick Cave
I made one more visit to the art fair, where at Jeffrey Deitch was a wonderful Francis Picabia painted in 1942, ‘La blonde au coquelicot’
I loved this work by Su Su
Great tribute to Olivia Newton-John by Alvaro Barrington at Anton Kern Gallery called ‘Sandy, Sandy, Miami Basel, 2022’. I was tired at this point as there were so many galleries to explore – 260 to be exact!
We escaped to Marfa where we explored the deserted streets in the middle of nowhere
In Marfa with Samia Saouma. I love this picture with Roland Augustine and our lovely host in their new space in Marfa which will be mainly used as studio space
We arrived at the studios through the Darren Almond artwork ‘Inflection Point’
We spent some time in the studios and enjoyed many works by Albert Oehlen
The Chinati Foundation is an incredible organisation. They have a large barn-like building occupied by many John Chamberlain crushed vehicles laid out harmoniously
We visited Christopher Wool’s studio and admired his wonderfully complicated sculptures
Our Marfa hosts were second to none! Charlene von Heyl, Christopher Wool with my Tiffany and Olivia.
In the evening, Albert Oehlen gave us a fascinating lecture about his work
The next day, we visited the Chinati Foundations once again with Toby Ziegler
The huge empty buildings were filled up with box after box made of metal of all different shapes and sizes
We checked out the linear lines of Andre Putman
Roland Augustine investigated the building with Sarah Crowner which felt like an expansive tiled empty swimming pool
Then there was shed after shed filled with Flavin light installations. Marfa was the calm and solid antidote to the chaotic and busy Miami
A wonderful farewell lunch with Grace Weaver, her partner, Tiffany, Toby and Albert; my favourite moment
