First Day in Miami
11 January 2023
In Las Vegas, I visited a recently defunct Greyhound bus station, where an exhibition was set up to recontextualise paintings removed from the major art centres. The bus station setting can be understood as a crossroads, a centre of exchange. Stefania Bortolami had opened in Las Vegas at the Plaza with Jonas Woods and his friends Koichi Sato and Susumu Kamijo
Next up were the Miami art fairs, and I enjoyed the wonderful the Global Art Breakfast at Art Basel to kick things off. I said a sad goodbye to Art Basel Global Director Marc Spiegler, and hello to Noah Horowitz who takes over
I loved this work by Lonnie Holley at Blum & Poe
At Ingleby Gallery, the Andrew Miller lampshade work was most impressive
I loved the work of Ding Shilun at Galerie Maria Bernheim
I discovered some new artists such as Emmie Nume
Miami would not be Miami without a colourfully dressed audience!
Loved the work of James Bantone at Karma International
At Morán Morán was the bonkers and brilliant work of Raúl de Nieves: meet ‘Timothy’!
At Peres Projects was a work by Dylan Solomon Kraus ‘City with the Pearl Gate II’. He is engaged with a re-interpretation of pastoral night scenes and his works get better and better
It was great to see the photographic work of Awol Erizku at Sean Kelly
I loved the interplay of Jeff Koons and Haim Steinbach at White Cube
One of my favourite works was Robert Rauschenberg 'Pimiento Late Summer Glut' at Thaddaeus Ropac
