Frieze New York
20 May 2019
There was so much to see at Randall's Island, we were greeted at the entrance by Frieze Director Victoria Siddall
We went straight to Frame and spotted the work of Yanyan Huang at Bank
Also at Frame was the work of Anthony Iacono at Marinaro Gallery
At Kaikai Kiki we spotted an interesting artist, Otani Workshop
Night Gallery were presenting some unusual ceramic works at Grant Levy-Lucero. ‘Smart & Final Bounty’, 2019
Then a witty stop at Dallas’ And Now gallery where Olivia Erlanger's work was a total showstopper. Mermaids of all colours were being swept away in the washing machine
David Zwirner’s booth was exemplary. Here’s a Christopher Williams work which depicts the back of a mask found on eBay
Tif Zab was checking out the new David Altmejd work at White Cube, a smoking head frozen in time
Many of the gallerists were inspired by their artists, such as Nick Koenigsknecht dressed in all white like his sculpture by Steffen Bunte
At Maureen Paley we found a beautiful little gem by artist Esther Pearl Watson, ‘Liquid to Solid’
At the same booth I was immediately attracted to Max Hooper Schneider’s ‘Shiatsu’
I loved ‘The Bus’ by Red Grooms at Marlborough Contemporary. A brilliantly immersive work, visitors were invited to climb aboard a bus filled with passengers carved from foam then painted
At 303 Gallery Sam Falls outdid himself. The work was outstanding, from ‘Untitled (Serrano Garden, 3)’…
…to the heavenly ceramic steps leading to nowhere
We then visited the ‘Diálogos’ section which focuses on art by Latinx and Latin American artists. Beautiful work by artist Firelei Báez from James Cohan and Kavi Gupta. There was much to be addressed, from the special hand sign to the favela on a stick. Memory and history in conversation with each other
We loved the work by Ken Gonzales-Day who explores many subjects including slavery, colonialism, imperialism and gender normativity
A highlight for me was rediscovering the work of Anju Dodiya at Vadehra Art Gallery. I previously talked about her in my Art Diary when I visited her in India last year. ‘Nest of Mirrors’ is a powerful work, Dodiya challenges us to question what we see in society around us. The work depicts her encounters with the art of David, Pistoletto, Magritte and Durer which are paired with photographs of her own drawings
At Simone Subal Gallery it was lovely to see the sensitive drawing ‘Day of The Fight’, 2009 by Anna K.E.
