From West Palm Beach to New York to London
21 January 2020
We visited Beth Rudin DeWoody’s wonderful collection at The Bunker
Art filled every corner… including this angry basketball
Artist and curator Maynard Monrow showed us around with great enthusiasm! He has assembled a selection that includes works by leading contemporary artists including himself - always pushing beyond ‘the greatest hits’ to deliver a more complete view of contemporary art today
Then in New York for my birthday which could only mean one thing, my favourite rainbow sprinkle cake!
We had fun rehanging our apartment. Pride of place is a lovely George Condo drawing and some fabulous vases by Sharif Farrag
It was a pleasure to visit Michael Nevin’s show at his project space, Journal Gallery. Chloe Wise’s paintings were spectacular, one of the hardest working artists I know
Chloe showing off her other painting ‘Tennis Elbow’
I thoroughly enjoyed the work from different generations of artists at the newly opened 80WSE Gallery
Jason Hirata has strewn a room with digital projectors displaying only a default start-up screen, while throughout the galleries are found drink bottles filled with urine. Yuck!
At Andrew Kreps we discovered this great work by Michael E. Smith
Hugh Scott-Douglas’ show ‘Spare the Wrench’ at Casey Kaplan is a gem. He is a special person with a scientific mind inherited from his father. Hugh returns to images created in service of the global shipping trade and its vast network of sea transport that exist
Very sad news that Norah Stone passed away. She was a great lady, when I saw Norman and Norah last year they were both sad, I had only ever seen them smiling before that. Together they built one of California’s most important collections of contemporary art and have been one of my guiding lights. This is a picture of them back in their hay day with Thea Westreich
On a happier note artists Ed Fornieles and Ben Wolf Noam are in residency at Tiffany’s TSS space on 1500 Broadway
Ed is making objects taken from his latest project ‘Cel’ which focuses on the topic of ‘masculinity in crisis’ and male identity in an economical or social environment
Ed’s pound algorithm is jumping for joy as the pound is up!
Ben’s drawing of Ed
Meanwhile back at Zabludowicz Collection there was a wonderful performance ‘Past x Present x Future = Spirit’ by Shana Moulton, I was sad not to be there. The new performance fused video, movement and song and was developed with her long-term collaborator, composer Nick Hallett, and artists Bishi and Andrew Kerton
Instagram is great and I adore Stefan Simchowitz. He posted this on his stories, on an art hunt, I hope he had fun
New York is full of surprises, at Hauser & Wirth Rashid Johnson’s powerful work was being exhibited. ‘The Hikers’ features formal arrangement that resonate with the fragmented mosaics and collages also on view
The dancers were wonderful, their movements reflecting Rashid’s new 16mm film which features two hikers passing each other on a mountain
A cool moment was visiting the Faurschou Foundation. The inaugural exhibition, ‘The Red Bean Grows in the South’ explores themes of war, politics and hope. Featuring show stopping works from Louise Bourgeois, Cecily Brown, Tracey Emin and many more greats!
Then to Brooklyn for a wonderful dinner in between the boxes and crates leftover from the show
I was back in a grey, cold and wet London – even with the weather I do love my country and I’m a proud Brit
On my way home I had time to rest and put my feet up to watch the last of Shana Moulton before we packed up the show and set up for our new projects. Testing Ground here we come!
