GREAT WEATHER, GREAT ART
1 May 2014
I have quite an English obsession with the weather, just as English as my love of cups of tea, so it was to my great surprise that the past few weeks have been an absolute joy! We have almost had enough sunshine to last us decades. Sunshine and art go so well together and so I find myself very easily basking in sun and soaking it all in.
At the ICA, Gregor Muir and Katharine Stout have once again hit it off with a wonderfully sensitive installation by Tauba Auerbach, an artist who featured in the Zabludowicz Collection painting exhibition last year.
A lovely photo of Tauba and her gallerist, Eivind Furnesvik from Standard Gallery, Oslo.
A big highlight for me was to visit Stuart Shave’s magnificent new building and return to Modern Art’s East End roots.
We were very lucky to acquire a really great Jacqueline Humphries, the best work I have ever seen her produce.
Liam Zab. had created his first ever performance art; ‘The Toy Soldier.’ He caused quite a stir in the streets of London. That’s my boy!
Then it was to Brussels art fair. This year’s young section was stronger than ever and certainly raised the bar for the rest of the fair. At Grimm Gallery, William Monk was matching that bar and showing himself to be a very interesting artist.
Our boys from Camden's Rowing Gallery had pulled it off showing an incredibly crazy installation by Heather Phillipson.
Heather has really triumphed with this work.
Roy Zab. was very proud of himself having discovered his first GIF art by the collaboration Flame. Will the Gif still be in use in the near future? Oh please no!!! Oh well, I have to embrace the new or I am out of the game!
Meanwhile, I thought Marcin Dudek had created an incredible work on the map of Poland, definitely worth a mention.
Dora Budor had spotted the work of British/Sri Lankan Christopher Kulendran Thomas at a show in CCS Bard and who coincidently was involved in Testing Ground at Zabludowicz Collection some years back. We managed to spot and snap up some of his work at the young gallery Boetzelaer
There was some rather funny art too as shown by Jean Francois Fourtou from aeroplastics.
Richard Jackson at Galerie Vallois was definitely funny and a total show stopper.
Beautiful boots at Galerie Christian Ehrentraut by the artist Andreas Blank.
Galerie mariondecannière had created perhaps the most complicated of presentations with ‘One day the sadness will end.’
Another artist who keeps catching my attention is Diango Hernández. His installation ‘By all means I am Here’ at Marlborough Contemporary was very poignant and reflected his Cuban sentiments.
I loved the pretty ’Fugue XXIII’ by Jean-Baptiste Bernadet. It felt like I was staring at a psychedelic 3D Monet. So refreshing and wonderful to see good painting.
Then the evening brought us a grand dinner hosted by the amazing Mimi Dusselier surrounded by some of her fabulous friends; Bernard Blistène Director, Musée national d'art moderne and Beatrix Ruf, newly appointed Director, Stedelijk Amsterdam, Zurich will surely miss her.
