Heading to Miami 2021
10 January 2022
There were still a few things to see in London before we left for Miami, and we all had so much fun!
The new Langan's restaurant is hung with an array of wonderful prints on the wall, such as this Lisa Brice work
On the landing there is a great painting by Tesfaye Urgessa
I arrive in Miami faced with a two hour long queue. I head straight out to the White Cube party where I am reunited with so many of my friends after two years. Then it was onto Art Basel Miami Beach art fair where I spotted this wonderful Grace Weaver painting at the James Cohan booth
We loved the work of Qualeasha Wood all about identity in the 2020s, really summing up life today. Her practice includes a range of media including spectacular tapestries like this one featuring created alter egos
The star of the show was Hugh Hayden. One of his shoe brush chairs was on display in the Lisson Gallery booth
Also at Lisson Gallery was this work by Liu Xiaodong, a real showstopper! Liu had been stuck in New York over lockdown and he painted the street scenes around him
At Mendes Wood was a fabulous Sonia Gomes artwork called "Intervalo". I had many secret desires and would have loved to take these works home with me
At Regen Projects was a magnificent Rachel Harrison sculpture called “Slimline”. It was great to see Shaun Caley Regen, the Director, but the week ended sadly as her hero, and father figure, Lawrence Weiner passed away. I thought he would be alive forever
Tif Zab was with me and had time to take photos of Anish Kapoor’s monolithic mirror sculpture, very different to his usual more rounded shaped works
At the Peres Projects booth, my eye was taken by Mexican artist Bayrol Jiménez
