Hello, New York: Part Two
17 December 2019
Meanwhile in London, Modern Art were showing this work by Torey Thornton which myself and the team loved and added to the collection
Back in NYC, one of my highlights was seeing the new MoMA and the Michael Armitage show. I loved the work ‘The promise of change’, 2018
The new gallery spaces were stunning and thoughtful
I realised I had never seen in real life Picasso’s ‘Les Demoiselles d'Avignon’ - it was an incredible moment. The colours and paint strokes looked as though they were created yesterday, dazzlingly vivid
There were brilliant activations as we passed through Haegue Yang’s show in the great dividing hall
The Shed was a happy surprise, the show by Agnus Dean was exemplary
We managed to drop into Arsenal Contemporary Art to see Rachel Maclean’s show ‘Native Animals’. Digital paintings and installations rich in satirical British identity, Rachel discusses the current political climate and Brexit. It was very interesting and made me excited about getting back to my dysfunctional country
New York was full of surprises, at JTT the weird and wonderful work by Elaine Cameron-Weir
Using an array of material including neon, candles, stainless steel and concrete
One of my favourite moments was the unveiling of George Condo’s sculpture at The Met. George was so happy and the sculpture was shining gloriously
There was art everywhere! On Wooster a young Japanese gallery NOWHERE has set up. They were showing works by exonemo
Proud of my girlfriend Jill Bernstein who hosted Rashid Johnson at the AFIM Gala. The decorations was some of the best I've ever seen, so authentic and sympathetic to the artist
A big treat was visiting Gerasimos Floratos’ Times Square studio where he created his own world within the neighbourhood he grew up in
I visit Carole Server in her inspirational home, it’s wonderful to see such a passionate and caring collector
Last stop, Ruby Neri at Salon 94 where I was stunned by her ceramics
