Helsinki and London in 48 hours
4 May 2017
From
Jerusalem to Helsinki for the opening of ARS17 at Kiasma. It was a treasure
trove full of the familiar and unfamiliar
Yung Jake on the top floor had created an incredible installation full of his works based on commercial advertising
It was no surprise to see Hito Steyerl’s works ‘Factory of the Sun’ and ‘How Not to be Seen: A Fucking Didactic Educational .MOV Fil’ installed to perfection for the Scandinavian audience
We were delighted to see Charles Richardson’s ‘Headbone’ again
Charles produced the work for his Invites exhibition with us last year
Great to see some of Anna Uddenberg ‘Savage’ works
Jon Rafman’s vorarephilic ‘The Swallower Swallowed: Rabbit/Pig’
Lizzie took up position in Reija Meriläinen’s work ‘Survivor,’ a 3D video game which takes you on an adventure through Kiasma
Artie Vierkant also had a presentation, with his usual layer upon layer. I found it rather hard to work out but Tiffany got it straight away
Ed Atkins had a powerful installation of his work ‘Ribbons.’ Great picture of Ed, Leevi Haapala, the proud curator/Director, Risto Ruohonen, Director of the Finnish National Gallery and Jon Rafman. It was a special evening
Then home for the night and the opening of our show ‘You Are Looking at Something That Never Occurred.’ The Zab team for this project was led and curated by Paul Luckraft and he really pulled it off. It’s a wonderful show of 14 international artists with work spanning 40 years, showing how photography can blur the boundaries between past and present and fact and fiction
The catalogue for the show is exemplary and we were delighted to have inspired a whole issue by Hotshoe magazine
So wonderful to see such a range of artists, from Richard Prince to Sara Cwynar
Some of my Düsseldorf favourites were out as well, including these magnificent Thomas Ruff’s
