Independent
29 March 2018
I arrive at Independent and receive a wonderful hug from Elizabeth Dee.
It is a special day for Women as it is International Women's Day, and every woman in New York knows it!
Tiffany and I have lunch with Mera and Jennifer Rubell. It was a special time for Jennifer, as she is currently in the middle of fabulous exhibition at Meredith Rosen Gallery, which includes a pie throwing performance
Like a moth to a flame, I am immediately attracted to the painting ‘Mad at me’ by Issy Wood at Carlos/Ishikawa
Issy is totally obsessed with Joan Rivers
Josephine Meckseper had a wonderful presentation of work at Timothy Taylor
There was a viewing lounge which had been taken over by David Gryn and Daata Editions
Beyond Independent there were some good shows including the wonderful Thomas Demand exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery. The show was so good it could easily have been at a museum. With Thomas, nothing is ever as it seems and there is often a significant meaning behind his simple looking but complicated works. The video works were created by photographing paper models and animating them with stop motion
This ribbon has been recreated in paper and cardboard from a photograph from the artists cellphone, one photograph from a number of ‘Dailies’ photographs taken and reconstructed. These photographed recreations are then printed and presented in the show
Later that night, we had a treat in the shape of an evening at MOMA in honour of Carolee Schneemann, who was being interviewed by curator Stuart Comer about her fearless investigation of ‘lived experience’. The talk was special, and she showed and discussed her breadth of work in four different parts, supported by special guests Melissa Ragona, Jenny Jaskey, Branden W. Joseph and Amy Sillman
The word 'love' in this work was replaced by the word 'painting'
