Eric Fischl’s vibrant figures at Skarstedt were jumping out of their frames
Maryam Eisler snapped this photo of Eric
KAWS’ beautiful wooden figure up for sale at Sotheby’s
Great to see Laurence Owen back in action for his Invites show at ZC
His sculptures were a total showstopper, the work really does speak for itself with some elements more disturbing than pleasant
At Milan’s Pirelli HangarBicocca space, Cerith Wyn Evans’ monumental work handled the space very well. ‘.... the illuminating gas’ is the artist's biggest solo show to date
I’ve not seen Anselm Kiefer’s ‘towers’ since they were displayed in the courtyard of London’s Royal Academy back in 2014. These almost painterly structures can be seen as man’s endeavour to reach the divine
I made it to Hauser & Wirth where I savoured the wonderful architectural window maquette by Isa Genzken
The window motif also featured in Genzken’s public sculpture proposal. Denying its architectural function, the glass no longer provides protection but is used as a tool to highlight socio-cultural issues
We loved the work of Alina Szapocznikow in ‘To Exalt the Ephemeral’. Born in 1920s Poland to a Jewish family she survived a concentration camp, later moving to Paris where she embraced the surreal. Sadly Alina passed away at the tender age of 46
‘Radical Figures’ at Whitechapel Gallery was spectacular! I found Sanya Kantarovsky’s painting ‘Letdown’ deeply moving. It’s brilliant to see a new generation of artists creating figurative paintings awash with social and political undertones. The wonderful Philip Guston once said ‘I got sick and tired of all that purity. I wanted to tell stories’
Michael Armitage’s ‘#mydressmychoice’ – such a sad background story
For 50 years Barbara Rossi was a key figure in Chicago’s art scene, both as a teacher and painter. These delicate works on paper were exhibited at The approach during Condo
We loved Katy Moran at Modern Art. She uses colour and gesture in such a suggestive way, a true talent
Modern Art’s Director Jimi Lee showing us this wonderful ensemble of Eva Rothschild works before we head to LA for Frieze
