London and Israel
22 June 2015
after many years of patiently waiting we were delighted to have Thomas Struth in our home and taking our family portrait.
A happy anniversary to Stephen Friedman, 20 years as a gallerist. So impressive and with so many amazing artists.
Then a quick skip over the pond to pay a visit to New Galerie where Jasper Spicero had produced the weird and wonderful ‘Centers in Pain’ during his 89plus residency at Google Cultural Institute, Paris.
Then before I knew it I was in Israel celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Israel Museum and their wonderful collection of Contemporary, Modern, Islamic and Judaica art. It was an amazing party and a little like a wedding with Director James Snyder leading the way in front of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
There was plenty to see in Israel. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art was showing some of Julia Stoschek’s amazing collection in ‘Turn On Time-Based Art.' It included a number of artists, with Helen Martin, Ed Atkins and Seth Price all on show but with a running time of at least 3 hours I barely got to see it. As usual there’s just not enough time in the day!
The museum was also showing an impressive exhibition of R.H. Quaytman curated by Mark Godfrey.
And a great photography project entitled ‘This Place.’ Initiated by Frederic Brenner it brought together 12 internationally renowned photographers to capture the reality of Israel. This is a Palestinian water heater painted in a Palestinian car paint shop. I love these works and Nick Waplington’s quote ‘This work suggests the possibility of renewal, movement and freedom.’
Children were continually interacting with this wonderful work by Zadok Ben-David in the museum courtyard.
Sommer Contemporary Art were showcasing a fantastic installation by Guy Zagursky. I heard that everything had already been sold to a very important international collection.
