London Life - January 2018
14 February 2018
Great to back in London after so many weeks away!
I dove straight into BFAMI where there was to be a big fundraising event the next evening at The Dorchester. Fatima Maleki hosted us with a wonderful dinner at home. The art ladies – myself, Fatima and Muriel Salem founder of the Cranford Collection
At The Dorchester our hero for the night was Alex Israel, his work ‘Wave’. 2017 was a big success!
Alex’s presence and support sprinkled magic upon the whole evening
Lisa Tchenguiz not only supported BFAMI with the acquisition of her first major work by Ai Weiwei, she was there to lend a hand to Simon de Pury who had injured his leg
I was proud of Dale Lewis who recently finished a residency with Tif Zab in New York
His new show at Edel Assanti was so great. Seeing his work deservedly hung to shine out with insane narratives
Serpentine gave a wonderful screening of the feature film ‘SPF-18’ by Alex Israel followed by a delicious dinner hosted by Hans Ulrich Obrist accompanied by Philip Tinari from the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing
Back at ZC and our annual Testing Ground project kicked off. MA Culture, Criticism and Curation and MA Performance Design and Practice courses at Central Saint Martins curated a wonderful show, ‘A Minute Ago’. They showed only video works such as Gillian Wearing, ‘Dancing in Peckham’, 1994
All the future art kids and their Daddies were out and about for the opening - Ed Greenacre of Rokeby, David Bebber and Haroon Mirza
I was proud that the students had chosen to include Rachel Rose’s work ‘A Minute Ago’, 2014, shown at Serpentine last year
The next day was the opening of Glenn Brown at Gagosian. The art works were fine art masterpieces. ‘Hot Love’, 2017 was one of my favorites
The sculptures were magnificent, I discovered the basis of the work were pre-existing sculptures and then blobs of paint added to the object
Then it was Master Class time, our annual weeklong workshop offering guidance to a pool of emerging artists. East day they had tutorials with a variety of people in the art world along with established artists, Richard Wentworth, Jake Chapman, Ericka Beckman and Michael Dean. Each artist gave a public lecture at the end of each day. Here is Richard Wentworth showing us his world of walkabout
I then rushed from ZC to Hayward for Andreas Gursky’s opening and dinner. Sadly all I got to see was an outdoor Jeppe Hein bench
Finally, I caught up with Martin Boyce at Tate Britain to celebrate his new light installation
