Lyon Biennale
18 November 2019
We jumped on a train from Marseille to Lyon where our first stop was Shana Mouton’s commission. Antonia, Maitreyi and I dwarfed by ‘Destiny Oracle Portal’
Tiffany in the intense work by Charlotte Denamur, ‘Rosées bleues’, at Institut d'Art Contemporain
Maitreyi was testing a VR work by Mélodie Mousset at the artist run space Interior and the collectors, curated by Christel Montury and Fabien Villon
Then we entered another monolithic gateway by Shana, this time into the main hall to view some great works by younger artists
We loved the sculpture, ‘In the Hullaballoo of Midnight’, by Megan Rooney who was looking at the grotesque as well as the beauty in everyday objects
It was the first time I’ve seen the work of Simphiwe Ndzube. There was an incredible amount of unspoken energy permeating through the air. ‘In the Land of the Blind the One Eyed Man is King?’ and ‘Journey to Asazi’
The best moment for us all was to see Rebecca Ackroyd’s extensive installation ‘Singed Lids’
Emulating a sense of disaster and excitement at the same time
The plane seating with a sculpted arm holding a cup of tea
We also loved the work by Jean-Marie Appriou
A new artist, Bianca Bondi, who reminded us of Roger Hiorns was very interesting. ‘The sacred spring and necessary reservoirs’ felt as though nature had taken its course
Holly Hendry was as usual working with materials to create some sort of pipeline with the sense of human cells running through it, ‘Deep Soil Thrombosis’
I admired the work of Sam Keogh
Then it was home sweet home to wondrous and new things in London! This Albert Oehlen show surrounded by mirrors mainly created in the 1990s
