Off to Manchester to visit the Ryan Gander show at Manchester Art Gallery
where we are greeted by one of his lonely Degas dancers.
Up in the main gallery we stumbled across a crumpled table plan from the night before and the Gallery Assistant’s all reading William Morris’ ‘News From Nowhere.’ It was a fabulous show and well worth the effort. Well done Ryan!
Further west we caught the Liverpool Biennale. Here’s Kelly Large, Curator: Public Programmes with Team Manchester Art Gallery.
The Biennale was rather fragmented with few spaces working harmoniously together however, there were a few gems. Glen Pudvine at Cactus Gallery was certainly one.
The John Moores Painting Prize wasn’t ready to announce the winner but did have a short-list. Covadonga Valdés’ ‘Homeland’ was rather lovely.
I was also quite taken with the work of Jane Bustin and this Thomas Hylander who both unfortunately hadn’t made the final cut.
The Old Blind School was showing Norma Jeane’s ‘All Artists are Liars (Potlatch 9.2)’ meaning the poor gallery assistant had to continually mop up the melting ice.
Michael Stevenson was on form with some wonderful and weird installations.
STRAUTCHEREPNIN’s ‘The Metaphysical Store’ couldn’t be ignored but I’m not certain whether I liked it. It’s very weird and nonsensical.
By contrast Judith Hopf’s multiple installations were a joy to encounter and return to more than once. They were scattered all over the place and ranged from this to concrete sheep. That really concludes my mad art blitz year and now I’m taking some time off before the crazy and exciting Autumn. See you for our Fitch/Trecartin show!
