Miami Basel Day 2
17 December 2014
The big day arrives and we are brimming with excitement. Once again Art Basel opens its doors and once again we have very few expectations but we're also praying we don't make any discoveries, it would be so much easier that way!
En-route to the fair we took a look around the Bass Museum sculpture garden and came across the usual question of ‘art or not art?’ with ‘Waterfall’ by Tatiana Trouvé.
It really reminded me of our Richard Hughes mattress ‘Pit,’ which we showed at Zabludowicz Collection back in 2008
Our first stop at the fair was Michael Werner where we spotted the perfect Michael Williams painting. Straight away we felt DONE and ready to go home.
But we soon came across our beloved home grown Thomas Dane and the Frenchman! Alexandre da Cunha had some magnificent towel works, completely divine and desirable.
A passionate Abraham Cruzvillegas. Maybe I’ve begun at last to understand his work, it has taken me a few years.
One of the highlights was at Mendes Woods Gallery where Cibelle Cavalli Bastos gave an intense performance. She was brilliant and we were all in awe of her incredibly fantastical stories.
Hans-Ulrich Obrist greeted us at the entrance, all ready for discovery.
The fair was really impressive. They had pulled out all the stops with loads of individuality, so much so it was impossible to see it all. I loved Kevin Beasley at Casey Kaplan, an acoustic cloth work that actually worked!
This wonderful Martin Boyce day-bed was a serious eye catcher at the Modern Institute.
Then a Dash Manley moment where we met up with the Ostin’s and Jessica Silverman.
The evening was the most fun, giving us the highlight of the whole trip with an alternative ballet where we were wheeled on our chairs into several different positions.
The experience was entertaining and very comfortable. I hope that Ryan McNamara takes this crazy concept around the world. It is a definite must see!
