NADA NY 2018 and Zurich
9 April 2018
The New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) New York 2018 was a place full of discoveries
I saw, for the first time, Hannah Greely’s work ‘Highway to Heaven’ in the flesh, instead of on a screen. The work was as good as it had previously looked on the screen!
The surreal ceramics by Genesis Belanger at the Mrs. gallery booth were full of imagination and intrigue
I met a wonderful Argentinian digital art collective called BasicaTV at UV Estudios; a new discovery for me
On my way out, I bumped into Scarlett Lingwood where she proudly showed me a picture of her mum Jane Hamlyn of Frith Street Galleries receiving her CBE for services to philanthropy and the arts
The New Museum’s 2018 Triennial, ‘Songs for Sabotage’, was about connecting images to the forces of structure in society curated by Gary Carrion-Murayari and Alex Gartenfeld. It was Alex Gartenfeld who curated in the Zabludowicz Collection’s The Shape We’re In’ in 2011 which was full of surprises. Song Ta’s works in ‘Who Is The Loveliest Guy’ asked some officers of the People’s Liberation Army to ride the rollercoaster in a Guangzhou amusement park
Artist Peggy Franck, who was also a part of the Zabludowicz Collection’s 'The Shape We’re In’ in 2011, here you are able to see her works in ‘The Shape We're In’ publication
Also British artist Hardeep Pandhal show his animated video work giving an insight into cultural stereotypes based on the artists own experience of growing up in Birmingham in the 90’s
In the New Museum’s recently inaugurated South Galleries, a space designated for premiering new productions at the Museum, there was an impressive performance of Co-natural by Alexandra Pirici, including a spruced up technical hologram described as a mediator of presence which moved impressively, revealing the ways in which images and living bodies influence each other. Curated by Helga Christoffersen, The New Museum’s Associate Curator and previous winner of the 2012 Curatorial Open at the Zabludowicz Collection where she created a show called ‘Troubling Space: The Summer Sessions’
I dropped into Salon 94 gallery, and like Mrs., there was a definite Matthew Ronay feeling in the air. Thomas Barger’s furniture pieces were also full of a certain narrative and mystery, even though they were functional at the same time
From New York we flew into Zurich to visit Keith Tyson in his new gallery, Hauser & Wirth. I am stunned how mature and sustainable the work of Keith remains to be. We acquire this gem of a painting for the collection
Also showing at Hauser & Wirth is ‘If Not, Winter’ by Anj Smith which showcases two years of Smith’s intensively charged paintings. Every work is a masterpiece and beyond
I also managed to visit the Kunsthalle Zurich which is showing ‘An Idea of Late German Sculpture; To the People of New York, 2018’ which observes the wonderful works of Lena Henke
I then dropped by Galerie Eva Presenhuber to view all the new wonderous photographs by Lucas Blalock in the show called ‘Ketchup As A Vegetable’. As usual Lucas plays with the psyche, rigging and reconstructing of his subject matter which were full of many deep meanings
This is a proud moment for Tiffany Zab curating a new installation including Dale Lewis and Ed Fornieles at T Square Projects in New York
