New York, New York
8 April 2022
So great to arrive in New York! First stop was to check out Rachel Rose’s impressive show, ‘Enclosure’, about the common ownership in England and the erosion of this privilege in the 16th Century
Also in Chelsea was an impressive show by Haroon Mirza, ‘For A Dyson Sphere’. As usual, Mirza is predicting the notion of sustainability, viability and ecology at its core, and with the use of light he is powering a whole symphonic eco system around him
Olivia and I then stopped by this very dark exhibition at Gladstone Gallery by Sharon Lockhart. At the centre of the show was a video work called ‘EVENTIDE’. Around this is a series of artworks, where the canvases are not actually black, instead they are under-painted with dye, coated, exposed to light multiple times and then recoated with cyanotype many times, which is one of the earliest photographic emulsions. The idea was to recreate the night sky like in the film ‘EVENTIDE’ reflecting the dark Swedish skies
At Casey Kaplan, there was a lovely show called ‘Remembering Estate of Marlo Pascual’
To confuse matters, on exhibition at Luhring Augustine was ‘The Medieval Body in conjunction with Sam Fogg’. It’s interesting to see a contemporary gallery taking a fresh view to show figurative sculpture in a contemporary context
Showing at David Lewis was the work of an older ceramicist, Peter Schlesinger
James Cohen had an incredible group exhibition, ‘A Través’ where artist Jesse Wine was definitely the star of the show with ‘Love and other strangers’
I also liked the work of Shinichi Sawada, a self-taught artist
A discovery in this group show was Jes Fan’s sculptures which meld together the inorganic and organic. We particularly loved this work
And I adored this naïve painting by Jessie Edelman at Denny Dimin
At Canada, Matt Connors had an incredible show, ‘Body Forth’, and included some of the best work I have seen
Then it was the moment we had all been waiting for, Keith Tyson’s incredible show at Hauser & Wirth New York
His paintings were show stoppers, and it was wonderful to see some wall drawings I had not seen before. His work is a constant. Each panel represents a date and time. A patchwork of the inner and outer worlds we all carry
On the first floor there was a fabulous group exhibition, ‘The New Bend’, curated by Legacy Russell. There was a wonderful atmosphere and I loved the work by Zadie Xa
Also this wall work by Qualeasha Wood was impressive
I stopped by Meredith Rosen Gallery to check out Theo Traintafyllidis’ ‘The Metaverse and How We’ll Build it Together’, in this piece two seemingly endless hordes clash into a violent free for all. Citizen militias, based on the 2021 storming of the capitol, and fantastical creatures enter the screen
