What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!
21 December 2015
Think Vegas was wonderful. The symposium was about putting together a group of like-minded and innovative folks from mainly the west coast of America to discuss ideas of what the art future may hold for Vegas and what may be possible.
The weekend started with a visit to Larry Ruvo’s, Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, designed by Frank Gehry in 2010 and named in honour of his father, Lou. Ed Fornieles checks out the medical coats.
We were then given a tour of downtown by Brian Paco Alvarez from Zappos and later treated to singing by the camp fire. Here’s the neon boneyard
A very happy Lizzie leading the way.

Walls walls everywhere!
Walead Beshty up to mischief pretending to be me.
Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Kevin McGarry lead the talks with a number of artists.
Post the symposium we all headed out to see Michael Heizer’s ‘Double Negative.’ Driving through the desert on what felt like a road to nowhere we suddenly came across two big holes in the sand. Everyone climbs down. Maitreyi is delighted when she manages to climb out.
It was a powerful feeling, standing by this work in the middle of the desert. It felt like it made our souls sing. Here’s Daniel Keller, who was one of five artists undertaking our first ever Vegas residency.
Eloise Hawser was another.
And Carter Mull came along for the ride.
As did Walead and Simon Preston.
The streets may not be paved with gold in Las Vegas but the shopping malls are full of art. See this James Turrell in front of Starbucks. Maybe it’s not for everyone but it’s an interesting juxtaposition. All you budding curators, turn your backs.
