Where do I begin?! Part 1
21 March 2016
We
had a beautiful lunch at Apsley House and a special tour by the wonderful Duke
and Duchess of Wellington.
It was built by Robert Adams as the London home for the first Duke of Wellington and is definitely worth a visit. Known as ‘Number One London’ you may even spot an infinite colour palate of the Duke by Michael Craig-Martin.
The next day I changed tack completely and landed in La La land. It was full on from the moment we arrived. First stop was to see Ericka Beckman’s ‘Cinderella’ which was most impressive and progressive for its time back in 1986. Ericka was a pioneer of moving image and influenced many artists of today.
We then visited the Broad Museum founded by Eli and Edythe Broad, and as we entered the bowels of the building it felt like we had moved into a brain surrounded by concrete skin. It’s a glorious building designed by Diller Scofidio and Renfro in collaboration with Gensler Architects. All the contemporary riches of the world under one roof and fabulous Tif Zab in the foreground.

The Alex Israel/Bret Easton Ellis show at Gagosian was amazing. Using the city of Los Angeles as the subject to collaborate on stunning printed visuals and text.
I was overwhelmed at LACMA with the beautiful Liz Glynns scattered around the forecourt.
A suite of eight bronze sculptures produced from plaster props from her performance 'The Myth of Singularity (after Rodin)' and referencing the process of creating large-scale sculptures by such greats as Rodin, Serra and Judd.
We then headed to Gavin Brown’s place 356 S. Mission Rd. We bumped into our old friend Anthony Valdez who showed us his shop and an incredible show by Seth Price called Wrok Famaily Freidns. It was a little weird but interesting. I felt like I was in a strange roadworks site which had been glamorously graffiti’d right down to the drainage pipes with transgender drawings all over them.
If that wasn’t enough, there were light boxes of human skin which provided an intense study of layers of skin.
