About
Abigail Spendlove works in a variety of mediums, from embroidery to video. Her practice explores how concepts of memory, communication, and entropy relate to the natural landscape. Spendlove’s almost scientific process often becomes part of the works themselves. Whether through drawing with melting ice or embroidering precise maps of the stars, she merges textures and elements to create sensible and poetic works that reconsider human’s relationship to the macro and the micro.
River (2008) is a video work filmed from an aeroplane window, looking down on a river. Following the river out to the sea, the camera captures the reflection of sunlight in the water, creating a vivid golden outline. As sunlight vanishes, the river seems to disappear into the hazy distance.
