About
Existing for a long time of the margins of contemporary art practice, in 2013, Shrigley's eccentric, humorous and shamelessly frank art was honoured with a Turner Prize nomination. Although at first glance his work resembles spontaneous doodles, this low-key aesthetic lends added resonance to the visual wit and dark humour that is Shrigley's calling card. Through his deliberately imperfect approach to drawing, sculpture and installation, the recesses of human nature are deconstructed and satirised. By inviting us to laugh at ourselves, Shrigley subverts the sometimes ponderous character of concept-driven work and demonstrates art's potential to provide temporary relief from the weight of the world.
