Mohamed Namou

Mohamed Namou plays with contrasting materials, their antagonistic qualities combining in order to generate a new dialogue in their union. A prime example of this is Open Stone (2013) consisting of a burlap canvas with pocket containing a small stained slab of rough-cut marble. This minimalist approach using raw materials is used to simply interrogate the basic classical notions of canvas for painting and marble for sculpture. Blending these two challenges traditional Western ideas of what art should be, highlighting how Western artists and historians have been arts canonical gatekeepers, excluding other cultures.
