In Conversation: LuYang

Join us inside the exhibition for a live talk with the artist LuYang, who is joined by scholar Fred Shan, to discuss their avatar DOKU, their interests from Buddhism to biotech, and what it means to live on the internet.

Producing game engines, 3D-animated films, video game installations, holograms, motion capture performances, virtual reality and software manipulation, LuYang is a Shanghai-based multimedia artist who creates fantastical, often painful, and shocking images. The artist collaborates with scientists, psychologists, performers, designers, experimental composers, music producers, robotics companies and pop stars to pursue the diverse range of her interests.

Fred Shan is a CHASE AHRC Doctoral Research Candidate at The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. His research explores how global ludic culture reconfigures the production and consumption of contemporary art in China, focusing on the generations of artists born in the wake of China’s economic and social reforms. His latest peer-reviewed article – ‘An Otaku with Chinese Characteristics? Localizing Japanese ACG Currents in Lu Yang’s The Beast’– was published in Screen Bodies in June 2022 (vol.7, no.1). Fred is Co-Founder of CHASE Digital Studies Collective (DiSCo) and Editor-in-Chief of Immediations. He also teaches undergraduate courses at The Courtauld. Fred holds an MA in History of Art from The Courtauld and a BA in Ancient and Modern History from Trinity College, University of Oxford.

The talk will be held in person at the gallery, and is programmed to coincide with the opening of our annual commission, LuYang NetiNeti.
