Larry Clark in conversation

Following on the success of Clark's record breaking retrospective Kiss the Past Hello at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2010, which received worldwide critical acclaim, the Zabludowicz Collection is pleased to invite you to a very special event with legendary American photographer and filmmaker Larry Clark in conversation with Zabludowicz Collection Director, Elizabeth Neilson.

Since the publication of Tulsa, his seminal 1971 photographic series which brought a disaffected generation from a normal American community into sharp focus, Clark's work has reflected and ingrained itself into the problem of American youth. The power of his photography and film lies in Clark's quest for realism, the raw truth stripped of all prudishness gives the work its dark appeal and undeniably influential ability.

Clark's still photography, which is filled with narrative tension has led him on to producing film and directing cult classics such as Kids (1995), Bully (2001) and Wassup Rockers (2006), films which blur the boundaries of documentary and fiction, often using untrained actors playing scenes which could be from their own lives.

Alongside the talk there will be a rare chance to view Tulsa (64 min, silent), a film by Larry Clark which was recently found by the artist, which will be exhibited for the first time in the UK. Made in Tulsa in 1968, Billy Mann and others from Clark's seminal 1971 book, Tulsa, comes to life in this 16mm black and white film footage. Much like the iconic photographs, the footage offers a glimpse into the group's daily drug rituals. Clark shot the film on a rented Bolex camera and the film demonstrates his early interest in narrative filmmaking and directing.

The film was first exhibited in a retrospective exhibition at the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris / ARC (October 2010 - 2 January 2011). On the occasion of the retrospective, an artist's book of work from 1962 to 2010 has been published by Simon Lee Gallery, London and Luhring Augustine. The publication is comprised of two soft cover books and poster in box with texts in both French and English (192 pages, 131 full colour illustrations).
