Master Class: Paul Pfeiffer

Known for his inventive manipulation of digital media and recasting of the visual language of pop spectacle, Paul Pfeiffer explores the role of images in shaping individual and collective consciousness. In this talk, the U.S born artist discusses his practice and approach.

Utilising found materials from a range of sources, Pfeiffer excavates the depths of contemporary culture. Assessing its racial, religious, and technological dimensions, his objects and images function diachronically, establishing profound genealogies which connect contemporary culture to the long and seemingly remote histories of art, religion, nationhood, and diaspora.

Biography
Paul Pfeiffer (b. 1966, Honolulu, Hawaii) studied printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute, received an MFA at Hunter College in New York and took part in the Whitney Independent Study Programme. His works has been presented internationally including: Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila, Philippines DHC Art Montreal, Canada; Thomas Dane Gallery, London, UK; Carlier Gebauer, Berlin Germany; K21 Dusseldorf, Germany, Melina Mercuri Centre, Athens, Greece; Museum of Contemporary Art, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA; Barbican Centre London, UK; Whitney Museum of Art, New York, USA; UCLA Hammer, Los Angeles, USA; Mori Art Museum Tokyo, Japan; Garage Center for Contemporary Art Moscow, Russia; Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA; Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; Singapore Art Museum; Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, China among others. Recent projects include a commission for Perfroma 2019 presented at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, and the curatorial EXODUS at the Watergate Building, Washington D.C, USA.
