Pecha-Kucha Night @ Club Ponderosa
Thursday 4 June, 7pm
Celebrating the creative energy in and around Camden, Club Ponderosa is excited to present an evening of lively conversation and dynamic presentations from some of the many artists living and working in the area around 176.
Drawing its name from the Japanese word for 'chit-chat' Pecha-Kucha Night @ Club Ponderosa will feature ten local artists presenting their works in speed-slideshows: 20 slides each, 20 seconds to talk about each slide. The slides can be images, sound or video clips or fragmentary performances but their duration and the artist's accompanying commentary have to stick to the time limit.
Artists presenting their work include:
Louise Camrass studied at the Royal College of Art and has shown work at Sadlers Wells, the ICA, Bloomberg Space, and Tate Britain as well as at international film festivals and on television.
Sharon Gal is a cross-disciplinary artist, performer and musician who presents her own weekly show for Resonance104.4 FM.
Denis Glaser trained at Middlesex University and Chelsea College of Art and has shown recently at the Busan Biennial, 2008 in South Korea, and at the Fordham Gallery on Whitecross St Market.
Studio Glithero is an Anglo-Dutch design practice founded by Tim Simpson and Sarah van Gameren who met while studying at the Royal College of Art.
Alex Hamilton is an Australian artist whose work is in collections including Saatchi and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Graham Hudson graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2002. His work is currently on show at Locust Projects in Miami. In 2008 he produced a major new commission at 176 for the exhibition Material Presence.
Alistair Levy graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2008 and was nominated for the 2008 Conran Foundation Award.
Sinta Tantra graduated from the Slade School of Art and then the Royal Academy Schools. She has produced commissions for the South Bank Centre, and Camden Council's Architecture Week and her first solo show is currently on at Monika Bobinska Gallery, London.
Shelagh Wakely studied agriculture before training as an artist in the late 1950s. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally, won numerous commissions and has been collected by the Arts Council of GB, British Council, Victoria and Albert Museum amongst others.
Samuel Williams graduated from the University of Brighton in 2004 and is about to embark on an MA in Fine Art Sculpture at the Royal College of Art in 2009.
Pecha Kucha Night is part of Club Ponderosa, a temporary social club produced by Matt Stokes in collaboration with local residents, artists and enthusiasts. It takes its name from both the ranch in the famous 1960s TV series Bonanza and a shelter built in a Newcastle neighbourhood by residents of a crescent seeking an independent space to meet and talk. Club Ponderosa will function as a place for performances and social interaction designed and programmed by residents of the area around 176. Developed in collaboration with self-organised groups and gifted amateurs, the club will operate within 176, but with its own series of events and a separate entrance and access times. It will also include MASS, a free collective sound system made up of donated elements. The project is part of Stokes' residency at the gallery and is being developed partly in response to the history of the former Methodist chapel that houses 176 and its surrounding area.
