The selection of the works is focused on the still relevant and growing importance of post-conceptual (primarily figurative) painting, which holds an unusual position on the British art scene. One of the key characteristics distinguishing the work of these artists from that of earlier generations is their deep and earnest reflection of important moments in the history of visual art. Many of the artists' works contain unmistakable references to hyperrealism or show attempts at linking up with classic 19th century academic painting or matching and developing the legacy of classicist painting from the turn of the 18th and 19th century. Some artists even reach back to French Poussin-style painting from the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition to the artists' formal approach in the form of a masterly painting style, the decisive characteristic is a deep-seated interest in the subject, based on a level of personal involvement that goes far beyond postmodern detachment with its empty motifs.
