For the first talk of 2019's Mater Class, Haroon Mirza is joined by artist Jack Jelf's to discuss their collaborative work, which draws on a range of disciplines and influences from particle physics to mysticism and ethnobotany.

Haroon Mirza (b. 1977, London, UK) is a London based artist. He has had recent solo exhibitions at Ikon, Birmingham, UK (2018); Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, CA, USA (2018); Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen, Denmark (2018); and Zabludowicz Collection, London (2017). His work was included in the 54th Venice Biennale, Italy (2011), where he was awarded the Silver Lion. He was recently awarded the COLLIDE International Award in 2017, which led to a two-month residency at CERN, Switzerland in 2018. In the same year, Mirza unveiled a sculpture commissioned by Ballroom Marfa, Texas, which will remain in the landscape for five years.

Jack Jelfs is a London based artist who primarily works with sound, electronics and live performance in order to combine both sculptural, visual and audio elements into his practice. He works closely with Haroon Mirza as part of his studio, hrm199, and has performed live at Lisson Gallery (2018); Tate Modern (2016); Serpentine Gallery (2016) and Barbican (2015). He graduated from the University of Liverpool with a BA (Hons) in Philosophy with English Literature, and from Imperial College London with an MSci in Physics with Theoretical Physics.
