Master Class 2023 guest artists announced!

We are delighted to announce the Master Class guest artists for 2023: Damien Roach, Richard Deacon, Chila Kumari Singh Burman and Toby Ziegler.

The guest artists will work closely with the eight early-career artists taking part in the Master Class programme, who were selected via a UK-wide open call. Together they discuss and develop their individual practices over a week-long intensive.

Damien Roach is a London-based artist, researcher and lecturer. His projects span art, design & creative direction, publishing, sound/music and audio-visual, and he is currently Associate Lecturer for London College of Communication’s Visual Media MA programme. Recent projects include immersive AV performances at London’s ICA and Tate Modern, design for clients ranging from Caribou to Disney, and publishing a journal exploring non-dystopic future visions with a host of contributors including Susan Hiller, Isabella Maidment, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Liam Gillick. He has exhibited internationally, including at the 51st Venice Biennale, ‘Learn to Read’ at Tate Modern, ‘Housewarming’ at Swiss Institute, New York, and solo presentations at institutions including DRAF, London, Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Switzerland, Arnolfini, Bristol, and Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Germany.

Richard Deacon was born in Bangor, Wales, UK in 1949 and lives and works in London, UK. He has a BA from St Martin’s School of Art, London, UK (1972) and an MA in Environmental Media from the Royal College of Art, London, UK (1977). Solo exhibitions include Kula Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts, Split, Croatia (2021); Middelheim Museum, Antwerp, Belgium (2017); San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, CA, USA (2017); Prague City Gallery, Prague, Czech Republic (2017); Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (2016), Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland (2015); Tate Britain, London, UK (2014); Sprengel Museum, Hannover, Germany (2011); Musée de la Ville de Strasbourg, France (2010); Portland Art Museum, Oregon, USA (2008); PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, USA (2001); MACCSI, Caracas, Venezuela (1996); Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, UK (1989) and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, USA (1988). He represented Wales at the Venice Biennale, Italy (2007) and has participated in the Venice Architecture Biennale, Italy (2012), Glasgow International, UK (2006) and documenta 9, Kassel, Germany (1992). He won the Turner Prize in 1987 and the Robert Jakobsen Prize, Museum Wurth, Kunzelsau, Germany in 1995. He was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the Ministry of Culture, France in 1996 and made a CBE in 1999.

Born in Bootle, to Punjabi-Hindu parents, Chila Kumari Singh Burman attended Southport College of Art, Leeds Polytechnic and the Slade School of Fine Art. In 2017,
she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate and Honorary Fellowship from the University of Arts in London. In 2022 she was awarded an MBE for her services to the arts. Burman has exhibited widely with notable solo shows held at the Mansard Gallery, Heal’s London; Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), Middlesbrough; Output Gallery, Liverpool; Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool and Tate Britain, London. Burman was selected as the fourth artist to complete the Tate Britain Winter Commission in 2020. More recently she has completed high profile light installation projects for Covent Garden’s historic market stall building, Liverpool Town Hall and Blackpool’s Grade II listed Grundy Art Gallery. She recently featured in Sky Arts documentary special Statues Redressed and BBC2 documentary Art That Made Us. She has also completed a number of notable commission pieces for brands including Netflix’s White Tiger campaign and Byredo’s new fragrance Mumbai Noise. She was invited to feature as the special guest artist at The Other Art Fair 2022, and to show at the Royal Academy Summer Show 2021. She co-curated upcoming Tate Modern Lates and was nominated as the Indian Art Fair’s London Ambassador. Her works are held in the public collections of the Arts Council Collection, British Council, Science Museum, Tate Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum and Wellcome Trust in London.

Toby Ziegler has exhibited internationally and has works in the Tate collection amongst others.
