Phyllida Barlow’s Commission at Highgate Cemetery - Final Week!
23 August 2021
Back in 2010, Studio Voltaire commissioned Bluff, a significant exhibition of British artist Phyllida Barlow’s work. This year they are working together again, with new site-specific artwork, act, now on display in Highgate Cemetery, commissioned as part of Studio Voltaire elsewhere
and in partnership with Highgate Cemetery.
Staged in the open–air courtyard of the West Cemetery, this large-scale installation reaches up to five meters tall and is made from Barlow’s signature everyday or industrial materials. This overwhelming installation fills the space with its tower of fabric wrapped poles within a monumental structure of concrete screed panels flecked with colourful paint. Moving away from this somewhat sombre sculpture you notice set-like elements as if in a theatre. This artwork is described as ‘both a dramatic and contemplative response to the elaborate, melancholic funerary architecture of the cemetery, and will bring audiences into unexpected dialogues with a landmark site.’ (Studio Voltaire).
Phyllida Barlow’s act will be on display in Highgate Cemetery until 30 August, for full details please visit the Studio Voltaire website.
