Rose Wylie at The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art and Plymouth Arts Centre
5 April 2018
From Thursday 29th March 2018 - Wednesday 30th May 2018, Plymouth Arts Centre and The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art will present a multi-site exhibition by internationally acclaimed painter Rose Wylie.
Wylie is best known for her colourful, bold and loosely-painted canvases that are often made from memory and draw on a multitude of cultural references. By merging imagery from different sources to elements of her own life, Wylie’s paintings offer a direct and sometimes witty commentary on the nature of visual representation itself.
The exhibition History Painting showcases a series of work, which echoes the Mayflower voyage and Plymouth’s rich past, including the Tudor period, the Blitz, and as a seaside resort. Commissioned for the exhibition, the paintings respond to the context of the two galleries, their architecture, location and programmes, while reflecting on the semiotic and ever-changing interpretation of images and history.
History Painting continues until 30 May 2018. For Further information please visit the Plymouth Arts Centre website.
