Yoshitomo Nara’s Travelling Exhibition Opens at Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan

After it debuted at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei City, Taiwan earlier this year, a travelling Yoshitomo Nara exhibition is now on display at Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan with the 53 works originally displayed, plus 26 new pieces! To express his encouragement to the people of Taiwan in their efforts in the face of the pandemic, Yoshitomo Nara added extra works including a newly finished painting, drawings made during quarantining, two Yamako Sisters paintings and a series of 15 photographic works to his exhibition.

This exhibition takes place of the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, and is just one part in a series of programmes put together by the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association and the General Association of Chinese Culture, to celebrate the friendship between Taiwan and Japan.

Known for his manga-style drawings, paintings and sculptures depicting images of innocent-looking children and animals with wry facial expressions, Collection artist Nara is often inspired by sources as varied as American punk and rock ‘n’ roll music and childhood doodles, which reveal the varied psychological states of youth culture.
